Hebden Bridge has a Fustian Cutters Knife in St George’s Square that is a tribute to the history of our local trade. The fast flowing, soft water Pennine streams were ideal for the production of Fustian, a heavy duty material. As late as 1970, the town boasted 4 weaving sheds, 3 dye houses and over 25 separate manufactures. Today there is one.
FIBRE – TEXTILE EXHIBITION
This exhibition celebrates some of the best textile art from British makers. Study the relationship between textiles and form as we aim to build awareness of fibres through stitch and art and the sense of commitment by these artists and makers to create something beautiful that’s not just an aesthetic piece but functional too.
This exhibition is contemporary whilst retaining a hint of nostalgia and instilling a sense of heritage. Bold lines, organic forms and texture will create an exciting visual story in Heart Gallery during the Arts Festival months; we may not be virtual but we certainly are visual!
