Looking for the best curries and Indian street food this side of the Arabian Sea? Just follow your nose. The gorgeous aroma from Vinod’s market stall is a dead giveaway and almost impossible to resist. It’s hardly surprising really: he’s been cooking professionally for almost all of his adult life.
Indian-born Vinod worked at cosy bistros and 5-star hotels before he started The Dosa in 2013. Today, he makes authentic Indian curries and street food made using recipes and methods inherited from Mum. This is genuine ‘home style’ Indian cooking, and everything here is made from scratch at his stall on market day at 4am (or as the cool kids call it, bedtime).
The regional menu covers Mumbai to Chennai, so there are mild and heavenly chicken, vegetarian and vegan curries as well as a delicious dal. Vegetarian and vegan snacks include crisp onion bhajis, and dosas ready for stuffing with aromatic ‘vada’ dumplings. Don’t forget to try the delicate coconut and coriander chutney, then wash it all down with homemade Indian chai. Watching your waist? Simple, don’t. If you really must though, enjoy the fact that Vinod cooks with sunflower oil, not saturated fat, plus his grub is gluten-free.
You can catch Vinod in Hebden on Thursdays, Sundays and bank holidays, or on Fridays at The Libertine in Mytholmroyd. Got an event? Perfect – you can book Vinod for your catering.
