If sipping a cider on the banks of an idyllic canal sounds good, you’d better set course for The Stubbing Wharf. This friendly traditional pub is full of character and has outdoor canalside seating just feet from the gorgeous narrow boats chugging quietly by. There’s riverside seating too of course, or a cosy interior for when the weather doesn’t play ball.
Don’t just come for the setting though. Landlords Matt and Sally serve a great range of hand-pulled beers and delicious wines, not to mention around 15 malt whiskies and 20 different gins. Coming by car? Don’t worry, there are soft drinks and proper coffee to enjoy, plus a huge car park to make life easier.
As for the menu, expect good food and plenty of it, as Matt was a chef in a former life and still helps out in the kitchen. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free diets are all catered for, but the real stars are showstoppers like belly pork with black pudding mash, braised red cabbage and cider gravy. Lamb Henry and giant fish & chips are two other favourites, with Malteser cheesecake the number one pudding on everyone’s lips.
In terms of facilities and entertainment, ‘Stubbings’, as it’s known locally, has a private function room perfect for parties, performances or product launches. The Shaggy Dog storytellers meet upstairs on the last Friday of every month too. Speaking of which, dogs are always welcome at this charming Yorkshire pub.
