We’re certainly not short of artistic and creative talent here in Hebden, and a fair-sized chunk of it is based at Northlight Studios. Whether you’re an artist after an affordable space or an art lover who just likes looking, you should definitely check this place out.
Launched in 1989 as an artists’ cooperative, this wonderful and well-known local venue provides an accessible and sustainable workspace for 25 artists, designers and makers. Tenants come from all over the Upper Calder Valley, so there’s a fascinating variety of skills and styles represented in the building, which is actually the area’s largest studio group. You’ll find painters, ceramicists, sculptors, printmakers and leatherworkers here, and even spinners, weavers and a stained glass window maker too.
Locals also love the twenty or so high-quality art education programmes run by Northlight’s Art School, which offers welcoming and great-value classes in a wide range of artistic and crafting disciplines. There’s even a fun weekly children’s session for budding young artists, plus a busy list of day workshops to help you get creative. If casual browsing is more your thing then the newly developed Artspace hosts regular exhibitions, or you can listen and learn at talks given by the artists themselves. Whatever you use it for, Northlight is something special, which is exactly why it’s such a well-loved part of the local artistic landscape.
