In a town full of unique and fabulous independent businesses, the Fox & Goose is right at home. Strictly speaking though, this friendly traditional pub isn’t a business in the conventional sense.  Instead, it’s a pub owned by the community (the first in West Yorkshire, don’t you know), after 300 loyal locals rescued it from closure in 2014.

Today, as well as contributing to its coffers themselves, these shareholders run the pub as a popular community hub where everyone’s welcome.  In fact, even local groups and artists can meet up or exhibit their work here, free of charge.  It’s an award-winner too, in 2019 earning the coveted title of Halifax and Calderdale CAMRA Pub of the Year, as well as coming runner up for the whole of Yorkshire.

So, what about the booze and grub, we hear you ask.  Well, there’s delicious real ale from a variety of independents, plus craft cider, continental lager and plenty of great wine and spirits.  There are soft and hot drinks as well of course, plus good hearty bar snacks including local pork pies, vegan pasties and even Scotch eggs.

Events are another big attraction, with music and poetry nights enticing locals and visitors alike.  Walkers and their dogs are welcome too, which is handy when you see the fantastic location, closely surrounded by glorious Pennine hills and their famous footpaths.  The cosy real fire is perfect for thawing yourself out, while the hardiest hikers can enjoy the lovely hillside beer garden all year round.

So, all in all this is a place to have a pint and feel good about supporting the local community, both at the same time.  We say cheers to that!
